To begin talking about the 1994 Women’s soccer team you have to go back to 1992 when Ken Spencer worked relentlessly with Dave Dunterman to bring on the birth of this program. Dan Ollero became the head coach of the team and Ken Spencer an assistant coach in August of 1994 and began tryouts and practices. Matt Mathesius joined the coaching staff in late August and was instrumental in helping the players develop as a team.
The team played Whitman College in a pre-season friendly and lost 2-1. Then on September 16th, 1994 played their first season game against Skagit Valley with a 4-0 victory. The team wanted to put their mark on the new program at CBC but had no idea of the competition they would face. After playing everyone in the league once, the team began to believe they could win the championship.
The team ended up after the season with a record of 10-1-1 which made them league champions and put them into the semi-final at Pop Keeney Stadium to play Highline Community College during the NWAACC Championship weekend. They won the game against Highline 1-0 and earned a spot in an all eastern Washington final the following Saturday against Spokane Community College. That final match was a hard fought with both teams battling for 90 minutes of regulation time and another 30 minutes of overtime. At the end of the 120 minutes the game was still scoreless and a shootout ensued to decide which team would be NWAAC champions. The team won that shootout with the team’s first three shooters burying their shots and the goalkeeper saving two of the first three from Spokane.
