Mike Fitzpatrick's wrestling career took off at Richland High School, where he claimed the 1969 State Championship in his weight class. As a senior in 1970, Fitzpatrick finished second after a double-overtime loss in the championship match.
Taking his talents to wrestling powerhouse Columbia Basin College, Mike Fitzpatrick proved to be one of the most dominant wrestlers on one of the most dominant teams in the era.
In 1971, Mike Fitzpatrick claimed an individual title at 150 pounds, with an exemplary 25-0-1 record. His 25 single season wins remains in the record books as the most in one season in the history of the program.
By the end of 1972, led by team captain Mike Fitzpatrick, CBC was riding a streak of 35 straight wins, culminating in back-to-back NWAACC team wrestling titles. Fitzpatrick claimed a second consecutive individual championship with a perfect 19-0 record. he was named the tournament's Outstanding Wrestler at the Championships in 1972.
Fitzpatrick set the CBC career record for takedowns with 155; he left CBC as the winningest wrestler in program history with an incredible 44-0-1 record. CBC outscored their opponents 1,166-190 over his two years on the mat.
Mike wrestled at the University of Washington during the 1972-73 season. Compiling a record of 28-3-1, Fitzpatrick won the Pac-8 Tournament. He also won the Midlands Tournament, open to college programs across all school classifications.
Fitzpatrick finished sixth at the NCAA Championships, earning All-American Honors.
