Columbia Basin defeated the Linn-Benton Roadrunners in their opening game of NWAC play by a score of 84-59. All but one Hawk scored in the contest featuring a balanced score sheet lead by freshman
Christian Cross' 13 points.
Jase Edwards added 11 points and 7 other Hawks scored 6 or more.
Both teams opened up the game with minimal scoring as CBC missed a few easy looks at the rim. Despite the sluggish start, Basin was able to still control the game on the defensive end holding Linn-Benton to just 18 points in the first half. Edwards and
Tyler Kurtz were able to provide some hustle plays to keep CBC out in the lead while they looked to dial it in from deep. As the half wore on Cross and fellow freshman
Amar Rivers were able to combine for 15 of the Hawk's 42 points in the half. CBC ended up shooting 53% from the floor in the half but it was the defensive effort that helped them build the 24-point lead heading into break.
Outside of halftime, the Roadrunners showed a little life as they began to hit their stride early with a few buckets from downtown. Basin was able to counter with Edwards who knocked down 4 shots in the half including his only 3pt attempt. Coach
Anthony Owens seemed satisfied with his team's effort as he began to insert his bench heavily with 10 minutes to go in the game. The Hawk bench accounted for 33 of the team's 42 points in the half lead by
Nick Gutierrez and his 7 points.Â
Gutierrez took over the reigns at point guard with 5 minutes to go and was able to navigate the game into the comfy 25-point win. As a team, CBC shot 58% from the floor and made 8 of their 20 3pt attempts. The win helps them stay undefeated so far on the year at 2-0. They will again take the home court on Tuesday the 23rd against a 2-0 Tacoma team before hitting the road for two weeks.Â
