FINAL SCORE: Columbia Basin 1 Tacoma 0
Columbia Basin punched their ticket to the Final Four on Saturday with a strong win over a Tacoma team who had previously knocked them out of the playoffs at home in 2019. The first for coach
Omar Anderson, the Quarterfinal performance that his team turned in was one of a team who looked like they had done it countless times before.
Right out of the gate, CBC put two goals away on beautiful crosses only to have them both called back on offside calls. Despite the tough luck early, Basin dominated time of possession and did not let Tacoma sniff the forward third of the pitch. In the 21st minute, the Hawks put together a counter attack after a Titan turnover and from a great pass from
Kylee Alvarez,
Cassidie Andrews was able to set up
Baylee Shewchuk for the lone goal of the day.
Although the score will look close, CBC continued to control the ball and was eventually awarded a penalty kick in the 69th minute but the Tacoma keeper was able to knock Alvarez's chance away after guessing right on her save attempt. Alvarez and company continue to challenge the Tacoma defense who caught some breaks as the final score could have easily been 6-0 CBC.
The Quarterfinal win bumps CBC into a semi-final showdown against the undefeated Peninsula Pirates. Columbia Basin opened up the year with a strong performance against the Pirates leading to a 0-0 tie. No doubt, Basin is eager to show Peninsula and the rest of the NWAC that they are hungry and they want the Pirates. They will have the opening game in the women's session starting at 4:00pm at Starfire Complex in Tukwila, Washington.
