Columbia Basin defeated Spokane 2-0 in the final soccer game of the season.
Mario Negrete finished with a goal and an assist in the contest.
Raymundo Mendez also added a goal off a
Diego Gomez assist.
In a scorcher morning contest, CBC took on a depleted Spokane roster that was down to their final 13 players. Temperature at kick off was 88 degrees and only rose from there. The Sasquatch played a slow defensive half to try and conserve energy and it worked. Both teams were held scoreless in the first half with both only putting one shot on goal.
As the day got warmer, CBC forced the issue a little harder against the Spokane defense. Basin continually pressed Spokane with quick and long attacks forcing the Bigfoot to spend energy chasing the attackers down. Early in the 50th minute, Mendez appeared to have netted the first goal of the contest but it was waved off after he pushed off on a defender to get the look.
It didn't take much longer for CBC to strike first as Mendez again found the back of the net off a great pass from Negrete that put him in perfect position. In the 54th minute, Negrete was able to put one away himself off the pass from Gomez deep in Spokane territory. Those two goals were enough to deflate any energy that Spokane had left. Both teams spent the last 20 minutes mostly winding down the clock to get to the eventual final score of 2-0.
The win finishes off the season for the Hawks with a 7-3-1 record, winning 5 in a row to finish off the season. Despite beating previously undefeated Blue Mountain 1-0, CBC still finishes in second place just 2 points behind the Timberwolves.
