Big Bend came back to defeat Columbia Basin in their home opener 61-55. The Vikings used a 26-8 4th Quarter run to edge the Hawks in the final few minutes.
Ali May lead the way for CBC with 19 points.
Megan Holm scored 12 off the bench while grabbing 5 rebounds in the effort.
After waiting 2 months to finally take the home floor, Basin looked great right out of the chute. With their high pressure defense, CBC created 11 first half turnovers while holding the 10-1 Big Bend team to just 17 points in the half. Early on the Hawks struggled to convert some easy looks but were able to stay with it to the tune of 31 points in the first half.Â
May scored 8 of her team high 17 points in the 3rd as Basin was able to withstand the defensive pressure that Big Bend began to apply. The Vikings were able to cut the lead to just 12 points after the 3rd as they began to utilize their dept. CBC looked fatigued early in the 4th as the Vikings continued to drive and kick, this time hitting their shots in the lane and beyond the arc.Â
With the score tied at 52, The Hawks had two good looks in the paint that just missed their mark and Big Bend was able to capitalize in transition with a few game sealing free throws in the final minute to complete the comeback. The loss drops Basin to 1-1 in conference play, 5-7 on the year. They will head to Pendleton on Saturday to take on the Blue Mountain Timberwolves in what is sure to be a slugfest.Â
