Jase Edwards and
Tyler Kurtz combined for 33 points in the 70-61 win over Spokane despite being shorthanded. The Hawks were missing 6 players due to COVID-19 protocols which left 8 players to take the court in the contest. As they battle with protocols, Basin was also again without head coach
Anthony Owens leaving
Bryan Edwards to step in as the acting head coach.
CBC and Spokane traded blows early as neither team was able to really get anything going offensively. Both teams began switching defensive looks trying to find any sort of momentum in the game. All 8 Hawks netted a bucket in the first half lead by 8 from Edwards. Basin shot just 5-19 from down town but were able to hold the Bigfoot to just 2-11 from deep. Both teams headed into the half looking for answers with Spokane leading by just 1 at 34-33.
Outside of halftime, it would be CBC who took control of the game while gaining the lead back and never trailing again. The starting 5 played heavy minutes and it began to show late as timeouts became more crucial. The Hawks lead by as many as 9 with 10 minutes to go before Spokane made their push. With the offense committing a few turnovers, Spokane was able to take advantage and tie the game up at 58 with 3 minutes to go.
With the score tied, CBC dug down into the tank and was able to find a few big shots first by
Donovan Cooper to push it back to 61-58. After a big stop, Kurtz knocked down a 3 of his own before
Carson Cloaninger followed it up with a 3 of his own to push the lead to 67-60 with 1 minute to go. Cloaninger was able to seal the deal with a lay-in and free throw to help Basin escape the upset.
The win moves CBC back to 3-1 in the East and 10-5 on the year. They will head to Walla Walla on Saturday before returning for a 3 game home stand to start February off.
