Columbia Basin defeated Yakima Valley 3-1 in a must-win game to stay in the East Region title hunt. Four different Hawks logged 8 or more kills in the effort lead by
Hokulani Sagapolu's 11.
Yakima Valley came into Pasco at 5-0 in the East Region to take on the 4-1 Hawks for sole possession of second place. In need of a statement game, coach
DiShondra Goree's bunch delivered. Basin got going early in the 1st set with 13 kills. After a couple of Yak attack errors, CBC took a commanding 11-7 lead. Yakima was able to cut it to 21-20 late but three more unforced errors and a Sagapolu kill gave CBC the set 25-21.
In set 2, CBC stumbled a little bit early as the height of the Yakima front row seemed to give the Hawk hitters trouble as they committed 9 errors on the attack. a 14-7 lead drew a CBC timeout hoping to find some continuity.
Grace Morby's kill was able to get it as close as 22-20 but a couple more mistakes from CBC gave Yakima the frame 25-22.
From the end of the 2nd set onward, it was all CBC. Once
Lucendy Perez got her first kill, the Hawk attack was able to start finding floor on the other side. Yakima had no answer for
Tamia Allen-Greggs and
Sa'Nya Vandyke who combined for 17 kills including some big ones late. CBC took a 21-12 lead in the Third after another kill from Sagapolu. Yakima continued to commit attack/serve errors giving CBC free points on their way to a 25-17 win.
Yakima gave it their best shot early in the 4th but CBC continued to put together quality passes that lead to strong kills. At 13-13, Morby put together a strong serving performance to go with a couple of kills from Vandyke and at the next Yakima timeout, it was 21-13 Hawks. Perez and Vandyke put away the Yaks with back to back kills on their way to the 25-15 win.
The win keeps CBC in the hunt at 5-1 in the East (17-1 overall). The will travel to Pendleton to take on a 1-4 Blue Mountain squad before returning home to take on Wenatchee Valley.Â
