Columbia Basin defeated North Idaho in impressive fashion 3-1. After North Idaho handed CBC their first loss of the season,
Lucendy Perez and
Hokulani Sagapolu lead the charge at home in the big win.
With some projection and simple math, the East Region title was on the line in this rematch of top ranked teams. In order to regain control of first place, the Hawks needed a 3-1 win or better and they got just that. In another big situation, the Basin lineup was locked in and stormed out of the gate. Sagapolu was hot early with 4 kills in a 12-3 run to start the set. The Hawks looked poised and
Josephine Thompson was receiving and giving good passes. NIC was able to cut it to 21-16 but it was Perez's turn to serve and that meant two more aces from the Sophomore to close out the set.
North Idaho was determined to make it a fight and Set 2 saw them come out swinging harder. Neither team lead by more than 4 points in the frame with each team trading kills back and fourth. CBC creeped up ahead 22-19 but left the back door open as the Cardinals went on a 6-1 run to steal the set 25-23.
Not to be deterred, Coach
DiShondra Goree made sure they were ready to come back over the top. Another tight set in the 3rd saw NIC go on an 8-1 run to lead 20-18. It was then that Perez and
Tamia Allen-Greggs who found the four in a pair of kills each to take the lead back 22-21. An ace from
Abbey Bonnington and a kill from Allen-Greggs shut the door this time 25-21 for the 2-1 lead.
The fourth set was all CBC from start to finish. With the score 7-5, the Hawks went on a 14-2 run including 6 in a row at one point. Both Perez and Thompson kept serving aces up while the Cardinals sputtered on the attack. NIC relied heavily on 50/50 balls that leaned their way most of the night but it would not matter in this set. Sagapolu registered 5 kills in the set as CBC went on to the dominating win 25-11 finishing off the Cardinals.
The win moves the Hawks to 21-1 on the year and 9-1 in the East. They are technically a half game behind the Cardinals who have played 11 games to CBC's 10 but the Hawks now control their own destiny on their bid for back-to-back region championships. They will head to Moses Lake to take on 1-9 Big Bend on Wednesday.
