Game Recap: Baseball |

Late hitting lifts Hawks in sweep of Walla Walla

Columbia Basin continued their winning ways Monday with a 2-game sweep over East Region foe Walla Walla. Both starters pitched well but were forced to settle with No Decisions.

Game 1:

Brady Toth was given the ball for Game 1 against the Warriors. Toth pitched 4 strong innings, scattering 4 hits and striking out 4 without allowing a run. Both teams struggled to get anything going on offense as the first 6 innings were scoreless. CBC had multiple opportunities but couldn't come up with a timely hit.

After loading the bases in the bottom of the 7th, the Hawks were able to chase the Walla Walla starter. Hunter Tiffany was able to reach on an error that brought home Easton Sprague. Payton Kallaher was able to break it open with a 3-RBI triple in the right center gap. Steven Meier followed him up with a Sac Fly for the 5-run inning.

Reliever Cole Pearson ran into a bit of trouble in the 8th, giving up a couple of runs on a 2-out double before getting out of the jam with a punch out. Chipper Lagrone was able to close it out on the 9th for the save as Pearson was credited with the win.

GAME 2:

In Game 2, CBC was able to do a little more damage at the plate scoring 10 runs in the game. Starter Sebastian Munoz made it through 4 strong before losing his command in the 5th. Mason Hymer was able to clear out the jam for Munoz who finished his day with just 2 Earned runs on 4.1 innings of work. Munoz also struck out 7 batters in the effort.

The first big inning for Basin came in the 3rd as Creed Mogle singled in the first run. Hunter Tiffany followed him up with a 2-RBI double down the right field line. Sprague again was able to drive home Tiffany for the 4th run of inning to give the Hawks a 4-1 lead.

Despite continuous quality outing by the CBC bullpen, The Warriors were able to get to Hymer in the 7th. Back-to-back singles plated the 1st run of the inning and sent Hymer to the bench as Jace Wessels came on to clean up. Wessels also gave up back-to-back singles allowing Walla Walla to tie it up at 5-5 heading into the bottom of the 7th.

The key sequence in the game came as Isaac Haws made his way to 3rd with two outs forcing Walla Walla to go to the pen again to bring in hard throwing reliever Hunter Polly. After a 1st pitch strike, Polly proceeded to throw 16 straight balls while walking in 2 runs. After Polly was relieved of his duties, Sprague connected on a fastball that drove in two more. A breakout day for Sprague who finished the day 4-8 with 3 RBIs.

Garret Bryant was able to finish off the 9th to close out the day with the final of 10-6. Wessels was credited with the win as the Hawks move to 8-0 on the season.

They will return to action next weekend in a 4 game non-league series against the Blue Mountain Timberwolves.
