Donovan Cooper nailed a corner Three at the buzzer to lead Columbia Basin over Blue Mountain at home 77-76. The game-winner came on the heels of a last minute comeback by CBC to edge the Timberwolves who previously defeated Basin at home.
Tyler Kurtz lead all Hawk scorers with 21 points while
Carson Cloaninger added 20 points on 6-9 shooting from beyond the arc.
After shaking things up in the starting line up for this one, the CBC defense came out with much better intensity as they had their hands full with Blue Mountain big man Chad Napoleon who scored 30 in their last meeting. As both teams traded punches, again the shooting woes plagued the Hawks. Kurtz was able to keep his team stride for stride with 14 of his 21 coming in the first half. The defense was able to keep Napoleon in check for most of the game including the first half. With both teams only scoring in the 30's for the period, CBC only trailed by 1 at half 33-32.
The second half featured much better action from both teams as the scoring began to pick up. Napoleon was able to score 24 in the half but it was Cloaninger's hot hand that kept CBC no more than 6 points down at any time. Both teams seemed to take issue with some non-calls at the rim as things began to get chippy.Â
With 2 minutes to go, Blue Mountain sank a Three to push their lead to 73-68. The defense was able to dig down and find the energy to get a couple stops.
Amar Rivers made a couple of free throws to cut it to 3 with 1:30 to go. Outside of a timeout, Rivers got his hands on the inbound pass that lead to a Kurtz bucket to cut the lead to 1. This time,
Jase Edwards was able to steal the inbounds that Rivers finished off to ahead 74-73. Napoleon was able to have his way inside to put the Wolves back up 1. A couple of hard takes by CBC surprisingly resulted in no-calls at the rim much to the dismay of the CBC bench. With 4 seconds to go, Blue Mountain missed the front end free throw before making the second to go ahead 76-74. The inbounds pass made it to Rivers at midcourt who immediately pitched to Cloaninger who found a wide open Cooper in the corner. Cooper's shot left his hand true and found nothing but net for the game winner.
The win helps CBC climb back to 4-3 in the East at just the right time. North Idaho will come to town on Wednesday for what is sure to be a must watch.
