Columbia Basin was handed their first loss of the season in Game 1 of a double header versus Southwestern Oregon before winning Game 2 7-3.
Game 1:
No NWAC baseball team has ever gone undefeated in a full season before and today marked the day that the Hawks would register their first loss on the year. After a clean first inning, starter
Ian Hughes surrendered a lead off walk followed by an RBI triple that found the gap in left center. SWOCC then used a sac fly to bring home the second run of the inning in what would be Hughes' only mistake of the season so far.
Dallas McGill was lights out for the Lakers as the Hawk hitters could not get anything going. Despite having multiple opportunities with runners in scoring position, Basin finished the game just 1-9 with runners in scoring position while stranding 9.
SWOCC was able to scratch an insurance run in the 8th on an RBI single before retiring the Hawks in order in the 9th. Despite the 2 runs, Hughes was again dominate on the mound going 5 innings while striking out 7 and giving up just 2 hits.
Game 2:
After being handed their loss, CBC was able to rebound for Game 2. Starter
Josh Aribal turned in 6 innings while giving up just 2 runs for the quality start. Aribal went 5 innings without allowing a hit before giving up 2 in the 6th.
The Hawks struck early with a 5-run inning in the 2nd to jump ahead early.
Brayden Mayencourt singled up the middle with the bases loaded that ended up plating 3 runs as the center fielder over threw third base allowing runners to advance on the play.
Isaac Haws then hit a sac fly to left to bring in Mayencourt to make it 5-0.Â
That was more than enough for Aribal as dominated the Laker lineup for 11 punch outs in his 6 innings of work.
Brooks Rasmussen singled in the 6th to bring home Mayencourt to make it 6-2.
Again in the 8th,
Payton Kallaher was able drive home Haws with another sac fly to make it 7-2.
Cameron Soliz was handed the ball in the 9th with a 5 run lead and asked to bring it home. Soliz walked the bases loaded with no outs but was able to get a fielder's choice which almost turned into a double play as the throw home was just a split second late. However, the very next pitch, Soliz induced the 6-4-3 double play to end the game with the final score 7-3.
The split helps move CBC to an NWAC best 13-1 on the year with 2 more games against the Lakers coming up on Sunday.
