Columbia Basin split the opening double header with Wentachee Valley winning Game 1 before dropping Game 2 late. Both Starters for CBC combined for 12 innings and just one run a piece.
Game 1
Looking to rebound after a few rocky starts, stater
Ian Hughes was able to net himself another quality start. Hughes was dominate in his five innings giving up just one hit while striking out 8.
Basin still continued to look for consistency at the plate but again were slow to start in this one. After 3 scoreless innings, they were able to manufacture one in the 4th on a past ball strike out before
Alex Rodriguez singled in the second run to put the Hawks ahead 2-0.Â
Hughes came out to start the 6th but was relieved after a couple of leadoff walks. Wenatchee Valley was only able to bring one run across in the inning as
Ethan Petty and
Jaxon Henderson were able to get out of the jam. The Hawks were able to plate two more in the 7th on Wenatchee miscues to go along with an RBI single from
Nick Grade.
With the lead at 4-1, Basin called on
Cameron Soliz for the 5 out close as he struck out four of the five batters he faced.
Bryce Fry added an RBI sac fly in the 8th as CBC settled in to the 5-1 win.
Game 2
If Hughes was good in Game 1,
Josh Aribal was even better in his start. The freshman righty controlled the zone all game to the tune of 11 strikeouts over 7 innings. His only blemish was a seeing eye single that brought home his only run allowed.
Payton Kallaher opened up the scoring with an RBI sac in the 5th for the first run of the game. Mogle singled in
Steven Meier in the 7th to make it 2-1 Hawks as the bats continued to struggle with runners on base.
The lone blemish on the day came in the 8th as the Knights were able to get runners on base with a walk and an error.
Chipper Lagrone came in to try and clean it up but surrenders a hit by pitch and a few hits allowing the Knights to take a 4-2 lead.Â
With bases loaded in the 9th and just one out, Grade was unable to sneak a groundball through as Wenatchee was able to turn the game ending double play leaving the tying run stranded at 3rd base for the final score of 4-3.
The loss keeps CBC even at 3-3 in league play. Basin will get another crack at WVC when they travel to Wenatchee on Saturday for the second leg of the series starting at 1pm.
