Spokane put away a rebounded shot in the 86th minute to hand Columbia Basin their first loss of the season by a score of 2-1.
Spokane scored early after being granted a penalty kick in the 16th minute. The Bigfoot looked quick and moved with a purpose early on causing some difficulties for the Hawks who had a goal taken off the board on an offisides call that saw irate CBC players adimantly protesting the call.
Outside of halftime, CBC moved with a purpose and began to push the tempo. In the 58th minute, forward
Gabriel Delgado was shown his second yellow card on a 50/50 ball which sent him off the field and put Basin down a man. The second yellow was the 6th in a row for the Hawks while Spokane was not shown a card despite some questionable challenges.Â
The turning point in the match was when
Raymundo Mendez collided with a Spokane defender as he tried to dribble the ball up the field. After the defender went down, Mendez got his leg tangled up as he tried to step by the down player. This prompted the Spokane teammates to shove Mendez who left the scrum with his hands up while walking away. Without any retaliation during the scrum, Mendez was shown a red card and sent off the pitch. Again the CBC bench erupted in dismay at the call which then forced the Hawks to play 9 men against 11 for the final 30 minutes.
In a herculean effort, Basin found a way to still control play and assume the roll of attacker. In 68th minute, CBC was awarded a penalty kick that
Zinedine Moreno put away to tie it at 1-1. However, the Bigfoot were able to put away a rebounded shot in the 86th minute. The Hawks were able to put two headers on frame in stoppage time but would have to settle for the 2-1 final.Â
The surprisingly loss moves CBC to 7-1 on the year but still in sole possession of 1st place in the East. They will get another tester when the travel to Pendleton to take on a scrappy Blue Mountain team.
