Spokane defeated Columbia Basin 80-76 in a defensive slugfest to hand the Hawks their first loss at home.
Jayden Martinez lead all scorers with 20 points.
Amar Rivers notched a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards.
Both teams could not get anything going early in the game as it turned out to be a off night for the Hawks. With 10 minutes to go in the first half, it was just 14-9 Spokane. Some uncharacteristic turnovers allowed Spokane to continue to carry the lead through most of the period.
Martinez was able to hit a three and lead CBC with just 9 of his 20. Ta'veus Randle was able to fight through a surprising no-call at the first half buzzer to get his lay-in to go. Spokane lead by as many as 9 but Randle's bucket cut it to 30-28 at half.
Outside of halftime, CBC continued to attack the rim but was just not rewarded with free-throws. Every time it seemed their defense was able to create some missed shots or turnovers, the offense could not capitalize. The key moment in the game happened with 3:39 to go with the Hawks trailing 65-57.
Latrell Barker and Spokane's center got tangled away from the the ball with both players going to the ground. Spokane's player proceeded to throw an elbow at Barker's head resulting in a Flagrant 1 after which he was slapped with a technical foul for taunting. The ejection and resulting free-throws allowed CBC to erase the deficit down to two points with 30 seconds to go.
However, Spokane was able to make enough free-throws to hold on to the game by a final of 80-76. The loss drops the Hawks to 4-3 in a tough East Region. They will try to get back on track in Walla Walla this Saturday against the Warriors with tip-off at 4pm.
