Duran's golden goal in OT elevates Hawks to 2023 Championship

Columbia Basin defeated Spokane in overtime of the NWAC Championship 2-1. The Hawks avenged their previous 4-1 loss to the Sasquatch in a perfect setting.

After beating Lower Columbia 1-0 in the Final Four, the Hawks faced a third matchup against Spokane after a 1-1 tie and the 4-1 loss. CBC was going to be tasked with containing Bigfoot forward and NWAC goal leader Abbey Jay. Jay scored a hat trick in the previous matchup with 3 second half goals in Pasco.

In rainy conditions, both teams came out physical looking to control the tempo. In the 10th minute, Gracie Reidt of Spokane connected on a deep shot from 30 yards out that just fit in between keeper Jayauna Keister's hand and the crossbar for the opening goal. Basin was not deterred as they were able to control the tempo while pinching off any attack from Jay. Spokane put up just the 3 shots in the first half with none occurring past the 10 minute mark.

Some bad luck for the Hawks in the 35th minute as Rylee McKay looked to have drawn a foul clearly inside the box as both teams headed to set up for the PK. After some confusion, CBC was shocked to learn the official had called the foul just outside of the 18. Replay appeared to side with CBC as the foul did in fact occur in the box but Janelly Verduzco's free kick was unable to get through keeper Kami Warden sending the game into half time at 1-0 Spokane.

Outside of half, CBC still continued to control the tempo with Hilda Cortes-Muniz and Ruby Shroll dominating the midfield. The back line lead by Violet Duran, Shelby Geiger, Madisyn Joyner and Teyanna Johnson gave the Bigfoot no room to work. Their only serious look came on another 30-yarder that was sailed well above the crossbar and out of bounds.

With just minutes to spare and staring defeat in the face, the Hawks were able to conjure up some magic as Emma Haertling got loose down the right side before twisting and turning to find Duran in the box who was tackled from behind. Verduzco was able to put away the resulting PK with a beautiful shot off the bottom of the crossbar and into the back of the net for the equalizer. Heading into over time with new life, it was now open for the taking.

The Hawks wasted no time as Ava Suarez drew a foul off the left side of the field from about 35 yards out. Haertling stepped up to take it and sent a great cross deep into the box that connected with Suarez's head rolling straight to Verduzco who tried a left-footed shot but inadvertently passed to a streaking Duran who put it away for the game winner.

The stunning overtime win hands CBC their first NWAC Championship since 2008 and first title under head coach Omar Anderson. Under Anderson, the Hawks had made 3 Final Fours in a row with the third time finally becoming the charm. They finish the season with a 17-1-3 record including 16 shutouts and a 7-game win streak to finish the year. Hilda Cortes-Muniz wins NWAC Championship MVP for her efforts and ball domination in the Final Four games.
