Columbia Basin defeated Peninsula in the season opener 74-56.
Erin Morgan finished with 17 points and 14 rebounds while
Trinidie Nichols and
Aniyah Heavens had 17 a piece in support.
With a heavy sophomore lead team fresh off a Final Four, CBC came in looking to send a message and did just that. Lead by the 5 starting sophomores, Basin opened up the game on an immediate 7-0 run. Peninsula's physicality seemed unnoticed by the Hawks as they raced ahead for 24 points in the first quarter and never looked back.
Once Heavens hit the floor off the bench, Basin now has a new dimension that didn't exist last year. Heavens was able to get to the rim and create in transition. Nichols and Heath also took turns with the ball while slicing and dicing to the rim. Morgan held the front court down shooting 7-15 inside while also grabbing 7 offensive rebounds.
Outside of half, Peninsula did its best to try and force a comeback but the team defense of CBC coupled with the strong guard play gave the Pirates no avenues. Despite a slow shooting night from the perimeter, the Hawks looked unphased as they were able to work in the paint for buckets when needed. When the final buzzer rang, they would take an 18-point lead to the bank for the final score of 74-56.
CBC will get a long and athletic Edmonds team in night 2 of the CBC Invite starting at 2pm on Saturday. Walla Walla will take on Peninsula in the morning opener at 12pm prior.
