Columbia Basin picked up a Game 2 win after dropping the opening game 7-3. The 4-1 win in Game 2 gives the season series to CBC 3-1.
Starter
Jace Wessels turned in a quality start but ended up with the loss as the Hawk batters struggled to get their footing in the early going. Wessels surrendered a run early in the first but turned in 6 and a 1/3 allowing just 2 earned runs.Â
Steven Meier had two big hits in the game including a 3rd inning double that brought home
Will Baker the tie the game at 1-1. Meier was thrown out a 3rd trying to stretch it to a triple, a common occurrence today as Basin had 5 runners thrown out at 3rd base including 4 inning-enders.
Wessels got an early out in the 7th but yielded way to the bullpen who was unable to get out of harms way. A handful of walks and a strike-three past ball lead to 3 runs for the Yaks in the 7th giving them a 5-1 lead. Meier again drove in a run in the 8th and was brought home by
Hayden Matray but it was not enough as the Yaks added two insurance runs to give them the 7-3 win.
In Game 2,
Brady Toth got the nod on the hill. Toth was stellar in filling the zone up and creating weak contact from Yakima. He did get into some trouble in the 6th after an HBP and a walk allowed Yakima to use a bloop single off the glove of Baker to scratch one across but Toth skated around the trouble allowing just the one run.
Harper Huang doubled in the 2nd inning but was thrown out at 3rd trying to stretch the RBI double into a triple.
Brooks Rasmussen found some grass for a 2-RBI single in the bottom of the 5th with two outs that would prove to be the game winning runs.
Gaven Mattson brought home Meier in the 8th to give the Hawks a 4-1 lead and a save opportunity for
Landon Webb.
Webb loaded the bases in each inning but was able to get outs when he needed as he punched out the final Yak of the 9th to give him the save and CBC the 4-1 win.
Basin now sits at 11-5 in the East, tied with Walla Walla and 3 games back of Spokane who sits in first. CBC will begin their 4-game series with the Sasquatch in Spokane starting on Wednesday. A series win will move the Hawks to within 1 game of first place. First pitch scheduled for 1pm.
