Spokane defeated Columbia Basin in a pair of games in Pasco by scores of 5-2 and 8-2.
Will Baker lead the Hawks, who were without
Steven Meier, with 4 hits on the day and a pair of runs.
Jace Wessels took the ball for his scheduled 3rd game start of the week and was good enough to win but didn't quite get the run support. Wessels was removed after 6 while scattering 8 hits and 4 runs, 2 coming off sac flys in the 6th.
Hawks tied it up at 1 on a
Hayden Matray RBI ground out that brought home Baker after a 2-base error from Spokane. Both teams traded runs again in the 5th inning but CBC was unable to capitalize on early inning runners all day. A couple of sacs in the 6th and the Bigfoot were able to hold off the Hawks while adding an insurance run in the 9th. CBC did have the bases loaded in the 9th but failed to score as the final out was recorded for the 5-2 final.
Game 2 looked much the same as the former. Spokane was again aggressive on the bases with plenty of hit-and-runs and bunts. Starter
Brady Toth had one hiccup inning in the 5th where a couple of bunts and bad breaks allowed Spokane to bring home 4 runs. Outside of that, Toth was solid, walking just 2 and going 6 and a 1/3 before being lifted.
Basin had plenty of hard hit line drives that just seemed to always be right at outfielders in the correct position.
Wyatt Lizama had a sac fly in the 1st to give the Hawks an early 1-0 lead but Spokane just chipped away before exploding for a big 3-run inning in the 9th.
Gaven Mattson drove in one in the 5th giving the Hawks their second of the day but that would be it for Basin.
The pair of loses makes Columbia Basin's hunt for a region championship a little out of reach but they remain in position to potentially clinch a 2nd seed and region host as the travel to Blue Mountain on Wednesday to take on the Timberwolves in a double header starting at 1pm.
