Matinez's game-winner elevates Hawks over Knights 3-2

Columbia Basin defeated Wenatchee Valley at home 3-2. Eric Martinez's late rebound goal proved to be the game winner. Rafael Lucio and Ethan Rojas also scored in support.

Both Wenatchee and CBC traded goals on the day with the Knights opening the scoring up in the 19th minute. An uncharacteristically slow day with ball control had CBC on their heels early. In the 29th minute, the Hawks received a penalty kick as the WVC keeper tackled Lucio off a corner kick while Lucio was in the process of setting up to shoot. Lucio put away the PK with a hesitation that caused the keeper to commit before Lucio sent it the other way into the back of the net.

In stoppage time just before half, Basin received another free kick just outside of the the 18. It was the left-footed Rojas who sent a beauty off the hands of the keeper and into the net for the go-ahead goal just before the half. Outside of half, CBC began rotating personnel looking to find some juice. Wenatchee scored again off a long cross in the 59th minute to tie it back up at 2. From there, the Hawks kicked it into 5th gear and began pounding the Knight defense with a flurry of shots.

In the 69th minute, Lucio had a free kick that spilled out in front of the goal where Martinez was able to wedge his way in and put the rebound away for the eventual game-winner. Basin had plenty of one-on-one chances deep inside the 18 but were unable to put up any quality shots.

The win moves the Hawks to 9-0-2 on the season (5-0-2 in the East) and in control atop the table. They will travel to Blue Mountain before getting their final big test on the road against 2nd place Spokane. If the Hawks win out, they are once again region champions.
