Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Shroll's late goal helps Hawks survive scare at home

Columbia Basin defeated Yakima Valley at home 1-0 to stay in possession of first place in the East. Ruby Shroll's late goal off a rebounded shot from Satori Zimmerman proved to be the game winner.

On sophomore day, CBC survived a potential upset bid by Yakima Valley to escape with the win and move 1 game closer to another East Region title. The Hawks were unusually slow to start in the early going. Yakima looked to pack it in on defense with a back row of 5 players. CBC was able to get some early shots but none finding the net.

The Hawks outshot the Yaks on the day 27-2 with 17 of them on frame. In the 58th minute, Ava Suarez sent a pass into the box after getting around the defender that went to Rosie Aguilera. Aguilera was able to seemingly bring down the pass in traffic and finish for the opening goal. However, both the Center official and AR1 got together to discuss and the goal was wiped off due to an unintentional hand-ball on Aguilera. Basin was noticeably upset with the call noting that nothing was called during the play.

As the game wore on, CBC began to press hard looking to avoid the tie. In the 77th minute, Basin sent a pass that went beyond the goal but the Yakima keeper vacated to chase but was unable to come up with the ball allowing Zimmerman to get a shot off on an empty net. The keeper was able to rally for the block but the shot spilled right to Shroll who sent the rebound through traffic and in to the back of the net for the eventual game-winner.

CBC moves to 9-1-3 on the year (8-0-3 in Region play). They need just tie or a win in their final match at Treasure Valley (3-7-1) to secure the region championship and the first round bye in the playoffs. Match time will start at 2pm in Ontario this Wednesday.
