Columbia Basin defeated Bellevue at home 3-2 in the East Regional Championship game.
Zuri Reeser lead the Hawks with 25 kills while
Kaylie Christopher chipped in 18 and
Kambree Baker with 12.
With a birth to the Elite 8 on the line, CBC was looking for some revenge on an earlier loss to Bellevue in the regular season and to prove that last year's regional win in Bellevue was not a fluke. The Hawks came out with some fight and took control of the match early on in Set 1. Christopher and Reeser were hot early as Basin jumped ahead 11-6 before a Bellevue timeout. They would go on to put a stamp on the first set with a 8-2 run to finish off the frame while letting the Bulldog front line know about it.
In Set 2, Basin again took command with a 10-3 start while taking advantage of Bellevue's shorter front line rotation. An ace from Christopher and a kill from Baker sent the set into Bellevue's final timeout at 23-11. The Bulldogs were able to make a little run but it was ultimately snuffed out as
Camille Collins sent one to the floor for the 25-17 final.
Both teams traded blows back and forth in Set 3 as the crowd began to get involved with the intensity of the match. CBC stretched another big lead to 21-16 before a timeout. Bellevue came roaring back with a 7-0 run to jump ahead 23-21 with help from a couple calls that were heavily protested by the CBC bench. The Bulldogs ultimately escaped with the 25-23 win. Feeling a bit of a momentum shift, Bellevue was able to put together a strong run in the 4th but CBC came right back to tie it up at 21 but 3 straight kills for BC carried them to the 25-22 win.
In Set 5, CBC dug their feet in the ground and began to punch back. Reeser, while fighting off pain in one leg, had 3 straight kills to give the Hawks the 8-5 lead heading into the switch. Bellevue came right back with a 6-1 run of their own to jump ahead 11-9. Just like a heavyweight fighter, CBC had a counter punch ready to step back ahead 13-11 lead by Baker and Christopher. With the match tied at 14-14, the Bulldogs served it into the net and on the final play, Reeser laid down the final blow for the 16-14 final.
With the win, CBC advances to the Elite 8 where they will meet the 2-seed from the South Regional- Edmonds in their opening round match at 8pm at Pierce College in Lakewood, WA.Â
