Clark defeated Columbia Basin in Pasco by way of shootout 2-1. The Penguins were 5/5 in their shootout attempts while CBC missed their 3rd opportunity for the 5-3 final.
A premature end to the season for Columbia Basin came at the hands of West 2-seed Clark. It was CBC who struck first in regulation as they were able to draw a penalty shot after a hard foul in the box. Sophomore
Julian Reyes put away the penalty in convincing fashion, sending it up and beyond a diving keeper. Both teams seemed poised to trade haymakers on the day but eventually, it was Basin that controlled the tempo and with their physical play, they were set to control the game.
In the 31st minute, the Hawk defense failed to clear a cross into the box that spilled out to the Clark defender who was able to thread the needle through 2 defenders and a diving
Dylan Isasi off the post and into the corner of the net for the equalizer. Heading into the half, that would conclude the scoring in live action.
Outside of halftime, CBC played in control and on point as they did not allow a serious attempt for the rest of the period. Thanks in part to their play in goal, Clark made 4 game-saving stops off of quality shots from CBC.
Sebastian Magana had a header that needed a diving save to be denied in the 55th minute. Deep into the half,
Julio Andrade sent a rocket on frame that caught just enough fingers to be deflected out of bounds in what seemed like a certain goal.Â
Both
Angel Pacheco and Clark forward Trenten Hacker were sent off with red cards in the 83rd minute, forcing both teams to play with 10 men. Neither team was able to muster a shot in the first overtime as most of the 10 minutes was spent waiting for officiating calls to be sorted out. In the second overtime, CBC had another strong attempt that was corralled in the box before it could be put away by
Rudy Silva forcing both teams into a shootout.
Clark did not miss in their 5 attempts while CBC was unable to sink all of theirs as the Penguins emerged victorious. For CBC, the season comes to an end at 11-1-4 while the Elite 8 finish.Â
