Columbia Basin needed overtime to defeat Treasure Valley 77-75.
Anton Williams and
Ta'Veus Randle each had 18 to lead the way for the Hawks.
A tough loss in Yakima last Saturday meant CBC would need to get a win at home against Treasure to remain the in East Region championship hunt. Basin's defense was able to hold down the long/athletic Chukars who were unable to score at their normal 90pt/game clip. The Hawks jumped out to an early lead with some sharpshooting from Williams who scored all of his 18 in the half.
Although there were minimal calls on physical inside play, both
Latrell Barker and Randle found themselves with 2 early fouls that sat them down for most of the frame. The Hawks were still able to hold serve at just a 2-point deficit going into half 37-35. Outside of the break, CBC went into a 10-minute offensive funk which saw Treasure grow a 11-point lead with 9 minutes to go.
From there, Randle was able to pull the Hawks back into contention with a personal 8-0 run to cut the lead to 4 with 6 minutes left. Basin clawed their way back in to a 1-point deficit after a couple of big 3's from
Jayden Martinez with a minute-thirty to go. Martinez again canned the tying 3 with 45 seconds to go but was unable to get the game-winner to go down but Basin was able to get a stop to send it into OT.
In overtime, both teams traded buckets but a tip-in from Martinez with 48 seconds left gave CBC a 3-point lead. One stop later,
Javon Handcox drove down the lane and was undercut at the basket. The call was upgraded to a Flagrant 1 foul giving the Hawks 2 free throws AND the ball back. Handcox made one of 2 but missed the front end of a 1-and-1. The Chukars came down and hit a 3 with 4 seconds to go but Basin was able to get it in as Martinez knocked down the first free throw before purposely missing the second to expire the clock and give CBC the 77-75 win.
The victory helps CBC stay 1 game back of Yakima at 7-1 in East Region play (15-6 overall). They will travel to Spokane on Saturday in need of another big win before their rematch with the Chukars in Ontario the following Tuesday.
