Game Recap: Baseball |

Hawks cap sweep with walk-off in 12th inning

Columbia Basin swept Wenatchee Valley in a Wednesday double-header 6-5 and 5-4 in 12 innings. Hagen Bowen walked off Game 2 with a pinch hit single to left in the bottom of the 12th inning.

GAME 1

Starter Jack Fenton was locked in for his start against 1st place Wenatchee Valley. The righty was able to cruise through 7.2 innings with one hiccup in the 4th allowing 3 earned runs with help of a few defensive miscues.

CBC got on the board early with a double steal on a first-and-third play that glanced off the Knight fielder at second. In the bottom of the second, Wyatt Lizama sent a deep fly ball to the fence that brought home Bowen with an RBI double. Lance Anderson and Kevin Brekke followed up with RBI singles to make it 4-0 Hawks.

A fourth inning homer and a couple more hits allowed Wenatchee to tie it up at 4. Fenton was able to work through the damage for another few innings unscathed. He walked just 2 hitters and struck out 5 on 106 pitches. Hayden Matray doubled in 2 runs in the 7th on a seeing eye fly ball down the right field line that would prove to be the difference. Simon Lemke was able to get a big strike out to end the 9th for the 4-out save.

GAME 2

Jake Robinson had his work cut out for him in Game 2 with a strong hitting Knight roster. The freshman was able to avoid damage all day as he scattered 7 hits including a solo home run while working 6.2 innings and striking out 7.

The lone blemish for Robinson came in the bottom of the 2nd as Wenatchee connected on a solo shot. Robinson was able to induce an inning-ending double play to avoid a bases loaded no outs jam in the 4th. Cole Rohlmeier drew a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the sixth to tie it up at 1.

Heading into the ninth tied up at 1, Wenatchee used a couple of infield hits and a triple to bring home 3 runs off Brayden Walls in relief. With their backs against the wall, Basin came through in the clutch with 3 runs of their own in the bottom of the frame capped off by a 2-RBI single from Brayden Mayencourt.

In the bottom of the 12th, Mayencourt lead off with a ground ball that was thrown away by Wenatchee. Alex Chamberlain was able to work a walk after falling down 1-2 in the count. With Bowen at the plate in an obvious bunt situation, the sophomore was unable to get his first two attempts at the bunt down but that wouldn't be enough as he sent the 0-2 fastball into left field that crossed up the left fielder allowing Mayencourt to come around for the winning run and walk-off.

The two wins vault CBC back into the hunt just one game back of Spokane for a share of the region lead. They will get a chance to continue the streak in Wenatchee on Saturday with first pitch scheduled for 1pm.
