Columbia Basin defeated Yakima Valley to keep the Yaks at bay in the playoff picture 89-73.
Coleton Hansen lead all scorers with 25 while
Keiren Brown and
Zander Kamai each added 15.
With a 3-way tie between Treasure Valley, Yakima Valley and CBC, the Hawks needed a big win to push ahead from the Yaks and gain the tie-breaker. After a poor shooting night against Wenatchee, CBC came prepared to fill it up and that they did. Hansen and fellow big
Kaden Bethel were able to score at will in the paint while Kamai and
Zadkiel Rodarte created looks at the rim. Yakima wasn't going down without a fight as the fast-paced Yaks created in transition to keep the game close heading into half at 49-39.
Outside of halftime, a heavy whistle slowed the pace of the game down with both teams finishing with 20+ attempts from the line. The slower pace worked in favor of the Hawks who shot 51% from the floor in the second frame. Yakima's shooting went just 1-10 from deep. Basin's zone defense clogged the paint up by effectively keeping the Yak drivers away from the hoop and created transition looks for easy baskets. YVC was only able to cut it to 8 midway through the half but Basin would not be denied as they pulled away for the 16 point win.
CBC moves to 6-5 on the year, tied with Treasure Valley for the 3-seed in the East. The Hawks will travel to Walla Walla for a big rematch against a struggling Warriors team who's lost back-to-back games on Saturday starting at 4pm.
