Columbia Basin swept their home opening weekend of region play defeating Wenatchee Valley 7-6, 9-2 and Yakima Valley 11-3 and 5-4 in 8 innings.
FRIDAY
Taking on #5 ranked Wenatchee Valley, the Hawks got their first big region test of the year. Starter
Peighton Fuhriman was nails in the circle as the Hawks took an early lead off a 3-run home run from
Lauryn Krick. The Knights were able to chase the lead back leading by 1 going into the bottom of the 7th but back-to-back singles from
Halli Lott and
Jaycee Jacobson walked it off for CBC 7-6.
Krick took the circle for Game 2 as CBC left no doubt in the second game. The sophomore went the distance allowing just a 2-run home run in the 3rd but striking out 10 and allowing 4 hits in the game. Lott broke it open in the 5th with a bases clearing double and was immediately scored by
Kaylie Christopher's double.
Kenadie Goudette homered in the 7th to put a cap on the 9-2 victory.
SATURDAY
With Yakima Valley coming to town on the back end of the 4-game weekend, Basin came in ready for a battle. Krick again was strong in the circle striking out 10 and allowing just 3 runs on a homer in the 5th. She was able to help herself out with 4 RBIs on two doubles and an 2-run home run, her league leading 10th of the year. Chistopher was 3 for 3 at the plate with 2 RBI's of her own in the effort. The Hawks got the job done in 6 as Lott drove in Krick on a sac fly for the 11-3 final.
The Yaks shut down the vaunted Hawk offense for most of Game 2. Fuhriman was rolling early with 4 scoreless innings before the Yaks plated 1 in the 5th and 1 in the 6th. CBC countered with a Krick solo shot in the 2nd and an RBI single from Goudette in the 5th. After a scoreless 7th, both teams headed into extra innings. Yakima got 2 in the top of the 8th on a 2-out double that just made it over the top of
Leia Duropan's glove.
Just when it seemed like Basin was down for the count, the offense hit the proverbial revival button. Goudette homered on the first pitch of the 8th to bring it back to 4-3. Duropan walked bringing Krick to the plate as the go-ahead run. The NWAC's leading hitter did not disappoint, coming up big with an RBI double to tie the game up at 4 and advancing to 3rd on the throw. On the next pitch, Christopher sent a deep fly to center that caromed off the top of the fence for the game winning double handing CBC the 5-4 win.
The 3rd ranked Hawks move to 20-2 on the season good for #2 in the RPI rankings. They will travel to Spokane on April 5th to keep their win streak alive against the Sasquatch with first pitch scheduled for 12pm.
