Umpqua defeated Columbia Basin 80-72 in the Elite 8 ending their darkhorse run.
Amber Swan had 25 points while
Sadie Tanner added 19 points.
Coming into the Elite 8 with another upset in mind, CBC had to take on powerhouse Umpqua lead by 2024 player of the year Brooklyn Fely. The Hawks were the aggressor early in the first allowing no room for Fely in the front court while attacking the Umpqua defense. Back-to-back fastbreaks gave the Riverhawks a 16-15 lead but
Analyssa Maldonado knocked down a last second buzzer beater to give Basin the lead.
Â
Both teams traded baskets in the second as Fely got a few looks inside but CBC was able to answer with Maldonado. With
Sadie Tanner on the bench with 3 fouls, Basin had to spread the defensive assignment around in transition. Maldonado would sink a free throw with 0.4 left on the first half taking a 36-33 lead into the break.
Â
With Tanner back in after half, the Hawk offense stayed the course with patience and the ability to get to the rim. Team defense played a big role in keeping the Riverhawks out of the paint. CBC entered into a lull with 4 to go as Umpqua tied the game up at 46 on a deep 3. A series of 4 free throws from
Amber Swan kept CBC ahead 50-46 with one quarter to go.
Â
Maldonado left the game with a leg injury just 2 minutes into the 4
th and Umpqua got Fely going inside as the Hawks were left searching for answers on offense. Umpqua crashed the offensive boards getting multiple putbacks on straight possession as the lead grew out of reach. A late run was not enough as CBC fell by final score of 80-72.
Â
The Hawks finish the season at 15-12 and a T6th place finish at the tournament.Â
