Box Score 4 Columbia Basin hosted their 3rd annual Coach G Memorial Invitational on Labor Day weekend. The freshman heavy squad finished the tournament with 3 wins in a row to claim the tournament championship. In their first action of the year, Coach Stewart's team opened up with defending runner-up and perennial Linn-Benton. CBC battled the Roadrunners tough but could not get any deep runs going as the fell in the opener. In the Friday afternoon match, they were able to shake off the jitters on their way to a 3-0 sweep of Whatcom.
On Day 2 of play, CBC took undefeated Tacoma to 5 and came out victorious in a 5-set thriller to move on to the championship game against undefeated Pool B leader Rogue. The Hawks put together great possessions in the middle of the first set as they extended a big lead for the set win. In the second set, both teams went back and forth with neither team leading by more than 4 at a time but the Osprays came out with a 25-23 win. Again in Set 3, both teams fought a hard-nosed battle but again Rogue escaped late with a 25-22 win.Â
Basin would not go away as they roared back in Set 4 pushing the match to 5 sets where they pulled away after the switch to a 15-12 win clinching their second tournament win in back to back years.
They will travel to North Idaho College for their next preseason tournament where they will open up against Carroll JV.
