Columbia Basin split a 4-game series against Lower Columbia College on Friday and Saturday winning both Friday matchups.
A huge offensive Friday for the Hawks saw them score 26 runs in the two contests lead by
Kevin Brekke who finished Game 1 5 for 5 at the plate and 3 for 4 in Game 2. CBC blitzed the Red Devils in Game 1 with a 5 run first inning lead by a 2-out 2-RBI double from
Joey Facilla.
Diego Escandon put an exclamation mark on it in the 5th with a 2-run home run to right field. Five different pitchers combined for the 7-inning win on the mound lead by
Branson Rozier.
In Game 2, the hits kept coming as CBC posted a 7-run inning in the second with
JC Garza smashing a bases clearing triple to right center. Another bullpen game for the Hawks saw 5 pitchers log innings. LCC began to mount a bit of a comeback in the 7th but the game would eventually be called due to darkness with CBC taking the 14-11 win.
On Sunday, the offense sputtered as none of the Hawk hitters were able to find any holes in the defense allowing Lower Columbia to take an early game 7-1. In the second game, Basin was able to get ahead early with RBIs from
Andre Muneton and Escandon. Starter
Sonny Salazar was spectacular for 7 innings allowing just 1 unearned run before losing command of the strikezone in the 8th. LCC plated 2 runs on walks and CBC was only able to escape after giving up 3 in the inning leaded to the 2-4 final score on the day.
The Hawks will open up conference play on Wednesday at Spokane in a tone-setting double-header at 1pm.
