Game Recap: Baseball |

Starting pitching great for Hawks; settle for split against Chukars

Columbia Basin split a double-header against Treasure Valley on Saturday by scores of 12-2 and 6-12. Levi Stevenson earned the win in Game 1 for the Hawks.

GAME 1

Stevenson turned in another quality start for the Hawks while getting plenty of run support from the bats. The Freshman held Treasure scoreless in 5 of his 6 innings with the lone blemish coming on a defensive miscue.

At the plate, the Hawks blasted 3 home runs in the game on their way to a huge output. Andre Muneton brought home Joey Facilla to kick off the scoring in the 2nd. In the bottom of the 3rd, Diego Escandon smashed a 3-run home run to left pushing the lead to 4-0. A heavy sun coupled with wind lead to a few balls dropping in the 4th inning allowing Treasure to plate 2 runs before Stevenson got a ground ball to end the threat.

Basin came back in the 5th with 2 runs before Facilla crushed a no-doubt 3-run home run to left, extending the lead to 9-2. The very next inning it was Kevin Brekke with a 3-run home run of his own put the Hawks in position for the early finish. Muneton came on for an inning and a third of no-hit ball to close it out in 7 with the final of 12-2.

GAME 2

As Treasure Valley pushed out its best starter in Game 4 of the series, the Chukars used another defensive miscue and 2 doubles to take an early 3-0 lead after 1. Starter Sonny Salazar would not be deterred as he settled into 5 straight innings of shut out ball allowing 1 hit over those 5 innings.

At the plate, Basin struggled to contend with the good offspeed mix on the bump for the Chukars. Andrew Lehman singled in the 5th to bring home the first run for CBC. Cohen Sunich received some good luck as his swinging strike 3 went to the backstop allowing Lehman to move up 2 bases and score on the play. Sunich would later score himself on another wild pitch to tie the game up at 3 after 6 innings.

The wheels began to fall off in the 7th as the Hawks could not field the multiple bunts laid down by Treasure and Salazar was lifted midway through the inning. The damage got the CBC as Treasure scored 5 runs in the inning, giving them a 8-3 lead. CBC scored 3 more in the 7th on an error from TV that moved 2 around. However, the Chukars continued their bunt assault on the Hawks who threw one away in the 8th allowing 3 more runs to score to put the game out of reach.

Treasure would add one more in the 9th as CBC settled for the 12-6 defeat in the end.

Columbia Basin drops to 5-7 in conference play and in much need of a quality series as they open up play against rival Yakima Valley on Wednesday at home.
