Game Recap: Softball |

Softball vaults to sweep after late comeback in first game

Columbia Basin defeated Big Bend in a Friday double-header by scores of 7-6 and 8-0. Freshman Taylor Martinez was dominate in the circle allowing just 2 runs over 10 innings of work on the day.

GAME 1

As an uncharacteristally quiet day at the plate unfolded for the Hawks, they found themselves down 2-1 early after the 3rd inning. Big Bend had just two solo home runs while Halli Lott had one of her own. Both teams added one in the 5th inning to move it to 3-2 heading into the 7th inning.

The Vikings erupted for 3 runs on a late 2-out 2 RBI single to give them a 6-2 lead with just 3 outs to go but Basin would not be denied. With multiple quality at-bats drawing walks and a hit by pitch, Rylinn Martinez singled to left bringing home 2 and cutting the lead down to just 2. Hailey Rasmussen singled with the bases loaded to center and as the ball bounced off the center fielder, 2 runs came around to score, tying it up at 6-6.

The final blow came as Adrianna Steele drew another walk and on ball four, the pitch sailed to the backstop allowing Jaycee Jacobson to score on the wild pitch for the walk-off win 7-6.

GAME 2

With vibes and momentum at a high for CBC, the Hawks came out in Game 2 and put away Big Bend early in 5 innings. Martinez turned in her best performance of the season so far with 5 innings, allowing just 2 hits and striking out 8.

At the plate, Hannah Robertson singled in Macey McCuistion in the first. McCuistion got on the board in the 4th with an RBI of her own before Robertson and Laci Ross went back-to-back with doubles bringing home 3 more to make it 5-0.

In the bottom of the 5th, the Hawks loaded the bases with 2 outs. Rasmussen slapped a hard line drive to left that caromed off the arm of the left fielder, rolling all the way to the wall sending two runs in and Rasmussen all the way to third. McCuistion promptly plated her with a line drive single to center for the 8-0 win to finish it off.

After the sweep, CBC will turn around and host upstart Spokane who leads the East currently at 7-1. The Saturday first pitch is scheduled for 12pm on CBC Field.
