Stefan McGovern enters his seventh year as the Head Baseball Coach at Columbia Basin.
In 2025, his team finished the year with a 30-22 record good for 2nd place in the East and a NWAC Championship appearance. Lead by all-league 1st baseman Alex Chamberlain, the Hawks were again top 10 in all hitting categories at the NWAC level and moved 8 players on the 4-year level including 4 D1 placements.
Before CBC, Coach McGovern was the hitting coach at Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo. After taking over as hitting coach, the Cuesta Cougars raised their batting average from .236 to .289 in one season and helped the Cougars find their way back in the CCCAA playoffs. In two years at Cuesta, Coach McGovern saw 12 of his players move on to the Division I level. The Cougars made the playoffs in both years that McGovern was on staff and he also coached back to back WSC-North Conference Players of the Year.
Prior to coming to Cuesta, Coach McGovern spent 4 year as head coach at West Hills College Coalinga, after serving two years as head coach at Menlo College, an NAIA school in Atherton, CA. In four years at WHCC, Coach McGovern placed 28 players at the four year level, and had one player drafted in the 2015 MLB Draft (B. Lorenzini- San Diego Padres). In just two years at Menlo College, Coach McGovern was responsible for leading the Oaks to its most successful two year run in Menlo College baseball history at the time, racking up a 65-45 (.590) record and an impressive 38-22 (.630) mark in conference play. In 2012, the Oaks went on a magical run down the stretch that netted the team its first-ever Cascade Collegiate  Conference Championship and its first trip to the NAIA National Championships in program history. The 2013 squad was equally impressive, finishing the season with the best overall winning percentage in a single season at Menlo College with a 34-18 record, and a remarkable 20-8 mark in conference play. This impressive record included winning streaks of 6 and 10 games. Over two years, the Oaks were 9-5 in postseason play. Under McGovern's tutelage, two Oaks players were selected in Major League Baseball's First-Year Player Draft: Jimmy Bosco (2013-13th round, St. Louis Cardinals) and Joey Webb (2013- 28th round, Washington Nationals).
McGovern came to Menlo College after a successful stint as an assistant coach with Division II school, Metro State College of Denver, from 2009-11. As hitting coach, McGovern led the Roadrunners to 8.7 runs a game in 2011, good enough for 6th in the nation, while their .330 batting average was good enough for 17th in the country.
Before his success at Metro State, McGovern helped guide Santa Barbara City College's baseball program to a wealth of impressive accomplishments as an assistant coach from 2006-09. Two out of McGovern's three seasons in the mix, SBCC reach the Southern California Regional Playoffs, including winning the first WSC-North Conference Championship since 1972. The school also set program records for wins in a season with 34, conference victories with 20, and shattered offensive records with a .332 team batting average, 49 HR's, and 161 SB's in the '07 season.
As a player, McGovern enjoyed a storied career as an outfielder, playing his first two collegiate years at Santa Barbara City College, before transferring to DII San Francisco State University for his final two years. He played his high school ball at San Jose, CA powerhouse Bellarmine College Prep.
Stefan and his wife, Nichole, have two daughters Olivia and Juliet, and live in Richland.
