FINAL SCORE: Columbia Basin 3 Yakima 0
While they didn't need a win today, CBC went looking for a statement game and they got it. After getting shut out 2-0 at Yakima in their lone league loss, the Hawks did what they do at home- win convincingly.
Not even two minutes out of the gate, freshman forward
Hali'a Kalehuawehe converted on a great pass from
Kylee Alvarez to put CBC ahead 1-0. Despite netting the quick goal, the statement coach
Omar Anderson was looking for was going to be made by the defense on the day. In order to hold on they would have to shut any Yakima attack down via a group effort of the back line and they got it. Lead by center-back
Avery Bond, the CBC defense was arguably as good as its been since their draw against Peninsula to open the season.
A scary moment for Basin late in the first half saw the Yakima keeper wipe out a group of players including Alvarez who landed flush on her rib cage after being undercut. Alvarez had to be carted off with excruciating pain in her rib cage. While she was being attended to on the side,
Amaree Moore came off the bench and curved a beautiful touch to a streaking
Cassidie Andrews who spiked it through the back for the 2-0 lead headed into half.
Anderson continued to press the issue with his team outside of half. He demanded they continue to attack and not rest on their laurels.
Kassadi Suitonu put the nail in the coffin with the final goal in the 77th minute, this time from Kalehuawehe. The Yaks had little to no opportunities on the day as the defense did its job shutting down top 10 goal scorer Brianna Garfias and the Yakima attack.
CBC is set to host their second round playoff game against the winner of Tacoma and SWOCC/Umpqua in the 2v3 game.
