Clutch free throws propel Hawks to win late

FINAL SCORE: Columbia Basin 62   Yakima Valley 57

Riding high off of their first win of the season on Tuesday, CBC looked to continue the momentum in a last second opponent switch against Yakima Valley. Alyssa Agundis finished with 13 points, 7 rebounds and 4 steals in the effort. Aaliyah Anderson added 13 points off the bench. Agundis lead the Hawks to an early halftime lead with 11 of her 13 in the stretch. Basin was able to turn Yakima over 9 times while holding them to just 24% shooting.

The Hawks continued the pressure on Yakima late into game but fatigue saw Yakima cut a 9 point lead down with 6 minutes to go by tying the game 47-47. Freshman guard Salee Westermeyer took control of the team after Agundis went down with an ankle injury late. With 53 seconds to go, Yakima crept within one after a deep 3 from Carla Cardenas. Westermeyer went to the line with 20 seconds left and drained both attempts to push the lead back to 3. A late rebound and two more free throws from Westermeyer was all the Hawks needed to close out the Yaks for the victory.

The win evens CBC's record back to 2-2 after a rough start. They will be back in action again at home on Tuesday against Spokane. Tip off will be at 5:30pm.
