Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball rides pitching to double header wins

Columbia Basin defeated the Walla Walla Warriors in a double header on Sunday. The Hawks needed just two pitchers for the day as both starters went the distance for complete game wins.

Game 1 starter Landon Webb finished all 9 innings in a pitchers duel that had no hits for 6 complete innings. In the 8th innings, The Warriors converted a leadoff walk into a run off a bloop single. CBC failed to score in the 8th innings while still looking for its first hit of the day. Webb turned Walla down in order to finish the top of the 9th. In the bottom of the frame, Tyler Polacek lead off the inning with a double that just made it over the head of the center fielder. With the no-hitter off the board, it was up to Cody Kehl to find a way to get Polacek home. Kehl delivered with an RBI triple to right center that rolled all the way to the wall. With no outs, Alex Rodriguez drove a fly ball that would do the job as Kehl sped home for the game winning run in an exhilarating finish to the pitchers duel.

Jon Garza dominated Walla Walla in game two which was much less dramatic. Garza went the distance allowing just 3 hits. CBC came out in the first inning with 4 runs featuring a 2-RBI double from Jason Tutton. Catcher Devon Garner drove in 2 runs in the game on 2 hits. Garza held the Warriors scoreless for 5 innings giving up just 1 run in the 6th. All nine Hawk hitters reached base in the game combining for 11 runs and the early finish in 7 innings.

The two wins push Basin's record to 18-10 on the year. They will take on Yakima Valley this week in a big 4-game series against the second place Yaks. CBC is 16-2 against teams not named Spokane on the year which should prove to be a good matchup against Yakima.
