Columbia Basin defeated North Idaho 4-1 in their final regular season match of the year. Coming into the match, CBC needed a win or a tie to claim the 2022 East Region title and they got just that.
It was North Idaho who struck first however. Early in the 10th minute, NIC sent a deep pass from the right side down toward the goal box. As keeper
Jose Corona made a bid to intercept the pass, the Cardinal forward collided with him at the point of attack. The ball proceeded to carom off Corona and the NIC forward straight for the back of the net and made it past a diving Hawk defender trying to clear the ball. Although the Basin players would plead their case to the center official, the goal stood.
Not long after, CBC came right back with a goal of their own coming from
Raymundo Mendez. Mendez took a great pass from midfielder
Alan Barragan and sent it straight passed the keeper for the equalizer.
Outside of halftime, CBC began to go to work on the offensive end. In the 46th minute,
Gabriel Delgado got his head on a pass from
Johnny Ramirez and found empty net for the second goal of the day. The header came off a free kick from Ramirez who couldn't have placed it any better for Delgado to finish it off.Â
On his next free kick, Ramirez decided he didn't need any help and sent a well struck ball into the upper 90 past a diving keeper for the 3rd goal in a row for CBC. Sensing blood in the water, the Hawks continually pounded the ball deep into the attacking third. They outshot the Cardinals 15-2 on the day including a 10-1 differential in the second half.
Their final goal of the day came off a rebounded shot from
Jose Napoles who had his shot redirected straight to
Jonas Olvera who sent it right back into the net for the score.Â
The win clinches a first round bye for the Hawks and another East Region title. They will host a second round playoff game on Saturday, November 5th against the winner of North #2 and West #3 immediately following the CBC Women's playoff game.
