Baseball cruises to 4-game sweep of Blue Mountain

Columbia Basin completed their non-league sweep of division foe Blue Mountain by scores of 10-5 and 7-0. The double-header win moves them to 12-0 on the season, the best mark in the NWAC so far.

Game 1:

Game 1 featured a rocky start by the Hawks. Starter Brady Toth lasted just 3 batters before being removed from the contest with a groin injury. In very short order, reliever Kyle Baumgardt was handed the ball before he could even get his coat off. Baumgardt was able to help CBC out of a tight spot early with an inning and a third before handing it over to Jace Wessels. By the end of the third innings, Blue Mountain held a 5-2 lead.

Wessels, as an off and on starter, was able to settle in and hold down the Timberwolves through the 6th inning at the same 5 runs while striking out 8. In the bottom of the 6th, Alex Rodriguez and Hunter Tiffany each drove in a run to even the game up at 5-5.

Scary moment in the top of the 8th when Will Baker camped under a fly ball with a runner on third. As Baker's throw came home on line, Rodriguez was able to gather it and as he began to apply the tag, the Blue Mountain runner lowered his shoulder into Rodriguez's chest, an illegal play that can result in an ejection. Rodriguez was able to hold on for the tag but immediately popped up to confront the runner as both benches cleared into a scuffle. After both teams were settled down and sent back to their dugouts, Rodriguez had suffered a finger injury in his throwing hand and would not be able to return for game 2.

CBC scored 5 runs in the bottom of the 8th with RBIs from Payton Kallaher, Tiffany, Nick Grade and Evan Bayless on their way to the 10-5 win.

Game 2:

The second game of the day featured another bullpen masterpiece as starter Sebastian Munoz handed the ball over in the 4th after surrendering no runs, no hits and striking out 3. Six different Hawk relievers each threw 1 inning combining for just 1 hit and 10 strikeouts.

Basin's big inning came in the 5th where they were able to take advantage of some defensive miscues and wild pitches to score 4 runs. Grade also singled in a run on the frame. Creed Mogle singled in an insurance run in the 8th to help put away Blue Mountain for the day.

The 7-0 victory helps CBC remain undefeated with an upcoming weekend where they will host the Lakers of SW Oregon for a 4-game series.
