Game Recap: Baseball |

Hawks, Vikings exchange wins for season split

Columbia Basin split their second double header against the Big Bend Vikings on Friday winning Game 1 14-4 before dropping Game 2 by a score of 9-4.

GAME 1

Slowly but surely the bats seem to be coming back around and Game 1 saw an explosion of hits. With a short list of injuries, Sebastian Munoz was called upon to move up from his normal game 4 start to take the ball in the first game of the day.

Munoz was sharp all game while commanding the zone with his breaking ball. After a clean first inning, the Hawks came out swinging with five hits in the first inning. Four different hitters each netted an RBI highlighted by Steven Meier's 2-RBI single.

If four wasn't enough, Basin scored three more in the second with singles from Brooks Rasmussen and Brayden Mayencourt to pad the lead to 7-0. Munoz made short order of the Vikings through three innings allowing just one hit through four.

In the bottom of the 3rd, CBC this time was able to bring home six runs on a handful of walks and hit batsman increasing their lead to 14-0. Big Bend was able to score three runs in the 5th inning as Basin lost a 2-out fly ball in the sun with the bases loaded. The Vikings also added one in the 7th but it was nowhere near enough as CBC cruised to the impressive 14-4 win.

GAME 2

Brady Toth got the start in Game 2 hoping to get the second win of the day. Toth allowed just a lone run through the 3rd inning on a sac fly. CBC tied it back up with a 2-out RBI single from Rasmussen to score Isaac Haws.

With two outs in the 4th and a runner on second, Toth was able to induce a shallow fly ball to center but both Basin outfielders collided just as Will Baker was making the catch causing the ball to come loose. The Vikings then put together back to back hits chasing Toth off before Garrett Bryant finished off the third out.

CBC was unable to get anything going until the 8th inning where they scored two runs on an overthrow by the Vikings. However, Big Bend came right back with three runs in the top of the 9th to squash the Basin momentum. The Hawks went down in order in the bottom of the 9th for the final of 9-4 Big Bend.

The split moves CBC to 5-7 in league play with Spokane and Yakima Valley coming up. They will host Spokane for the first leg of the series at home on Wednesday April 20th at 1pm before traveling to Spokane for leg two.
