Columbia Basin split a double-header vs Grays Harbor winning Game 1 14-2 but dropping Game 2 9-6.
GAME 1
CBC wasted no time in the first inning with
Hayden Matray blasting a grand slam to left to put the Hawks ahead 4-0.
Brayden Mayencourt doubled in a run in the second to help push the lead to 6-0 which would be more than enough for starter
Jace Wessels. Wessels was solid in his first outing going 5 and a third while scattering 4 hits and giving up just one.
Kyle Sunich and
Harper Huang each singled in a run late in the 5th inning to extend the lead to 8-0. Six different Hawks drove in a run in the 6-run 6th inning capped by a 2-RBI single from Huang.Â
Josh Ruffner was able to close it out for CBC who needed just 7 innings to get the job done 14-2. Huang finished 3 for 3 after coming in for the injured Mayencourt including 3 RBIs.
GAME 2
After a strong offensive performance in Game 1, the breaks did not go Basin's way in the second tilt. Grays Harbor plated 2 in the 1st inning to take an early lead. Starter
Jaxon Henderson was able to settle in for two more innings of scoreless ball.
Despite having a multitude of runners in scoring position, Basin was unable to convert early while stranding the bases loaded twice on double plays. The Hawks left 13 runners on base in the game but were not short on hits.
They were finally able to get on the board in the 6th with
Christian Jarocki and
Jered Faifai driving in runs giving CBC a 3-2 lead. However, strike zone woes hit the CBC bullpen again as walks and untimely hits lead to a 7-run inning for the Chokers giving them the eventual winning runs.
Basin scored 2 in the bottom of the 8th off an errant pick off attempt that sailed into center field but again left the bases loaded on a deep flyout. Huang gave the Hawks one more back on a solo home run that sailed halfway up the trees in right field but it wasn't enough as Harbor would hold on to the 9-6 lead for the win.
CBC drops to 1-3 on the season with plenty of action left in preseason. They will host Big Bend and Centralia on February 24th, 25th in a pair of double headers starting at 11am.
