Columbia Basin defeated Walla Walla to clinch its first East Region title under head coach Amy Sokaitis.
Trinidie Nichols posted another big line with 17 points/7 rebounds/6 steals and 4 assists.
Mickayla Robertson and
Kenzi Pedersen each scored 9 off the bench in support.
In a rare off night for
Lexie Heath, the Hawks found a way to weather a 3-quarter deficit to come back and win. Shooting woes plagued CBC early as Walla Walla's defense and rebounding kept opportunities limited. Headed into half time both Nichols and Heath had combined for just 2 points. Despite the rough going on offense, CBC trailed just 6 points at the break 27-21.
In the Third, Basin was able to get some momentum on offense. Nichols scored 9 in the frame but the whistle kept the Warriors in the game with 12 free throws allowing them to carry a 9 point lead into the Fourth.
With a big quarter coming up, the Hawk defense dug their heels into the ground and began to shut down the Warriors on offense. Walla Walla shot just 3 of 20 from the field including 0-10 from 3. Meanwhile, the Hawks went into the low post getting buckets from both Robertson and Pedersen who were able to take advantage of the height discrepancy. With 2:48 to go, Robertson spun in the lane to lay one up and in to give CBC their first lead 53-52. Walla Walla was able to get 9 offensive rebounds in the quarter but were able to turn them in to anything as Basin got steals just when they needed it and took care of the ball in the final seconds to survive with a final of 58-54.
The win gives CBC the East Region title with 2 games still to play at 11-3. They will travel to Ontario Monday afternoon to make up their game with Treasure Valley starting at 5:30pm MST (4:30 local time).
