Peninsula defeated Columbia Basin by score of 78-67.
Aniyah Heavens lead all scorers with 30 while
Analyssa Maldonado added 11.
In the season opener, CBC got all they could handle from Peninsula. With a whole new roster of players lead by Heavens and
Baylie Voile as the only returners, the Hawks were able to rise to the challenge. For most of the 1st half, it was Basin who controlled the tempo and knocked down shots knocking down 6 of 16 from deep. Peninsula's size presented problems for the Hawks who stand just 5'11 with freshman
Ezrah Ray.
After taking in a 37-31 lead into the half, CBC succumbed to a 15-0 run to start the 3rd for the Pirates. Basin was able to tie it back up at 54 early in the 4th quarter on a spinning layup from Heavens but the Pirates began to pound it in to the post. CBC had no answer inside as Peninsula was able to get offensive rebounds and easy putbacks on their way to the 78-67 final.
The strong showing for CBC in their first contest doesn't result in a win but they will get a chance to rebound against Lower Columbia who fell to Walla Walla 65-52 in the first game of the day. Tipoff is scheduled for 3pm on Friday.
