Pitching leads Hawks to sweep of Lakers

Columbia Basin defeated Southwestern Oregon in a pair of Saturday games by scores of 4-2 and 6-4. Both starters Jack Fenton and Jake Robinson combined for 11 innings and no runs allowed.

GAME 1

After sustaining an acute injury to his pitching arm opening weekend, Fenton came back at full strength to turn in a quality outing of 4 hitless innings. His only trouble came in the 3rd after a pair of walks but he was able to navigate around them with a 2-out fly ball to make through unscathed. The sophomore added 6 K's for good measure.

Caleb Eisenhower struck first with his 3rd double of the year good for an RBI giving CBC the 1-0 lead. In the 4th, Trevor Dale clobbered his second home run of the year leading off. SWOCC was able to convert a leadoff triple in the 6th but Brayden Walls was able to mitigate the damage by allowing just the one run. Simon Lemke was able to record the final out in the 6th for Walls but ran into trouble himself with a couple of walks in the 7th. The Lakers eventually scored on a wild pitch to tie it up but would not score again.

Pinch runner James Lawrence gave the lead right back to the Hawks in the bottom of the 7th by scoring on a wild pitch. A Lance Anderson groundout gave Basin one more insurance run which was good enough for Lemke to convert for the eventual 4-2 final.

GAME 2

In Game 2, it was lefty Jake Robinson's turn to dominate the mound and he turned in a gem going 7 innings allowing just 2 hits and striking out 13 hitters. Meanwhile, CBC was able to slowly build a lead with team at-bat's from Anderson in the 3rd with a fielder's choice and a single from Hagen Bowen in the 5th giving the Hawks a 2-0 lead. Basin finally turned in a big inning in the 6th with 3 runs off an early Laker error.

The bullpen ran into a little trouble in the 8th allowing SWOCC back into it with 4 runs to make it 5-4 but James Lawrence was able to convert the 4-out save with an insurance run to seal the game with the 6-4 win.

The Hawks will host another double on Sunday against the Lakers as they look to build a winning streak. First pitch at 11am.
