Game Recap: Softball |

Softball opens 2024 with sweep of Chemeketa

Columbia Basin defeated Chemeketa in a pair of opening day games by scores of 9-8 and 14-2 (5 innings). Freshman Lauryn Krick and Sierra Escalera recorded wins to lead the Hawks in the circle.

With a ton of fresh new faces and All-American returners, CBC was set to continue their winning ways against the Storm. The Hawks scored 3 early runs in the opening innings lead by a double from Bree Waldron who was brought home by a Stephanie Bryson single.

Chemeketa struck back with 3 of their own including 2 in the 4th inning aided by a called illegal pitch on Krick who was seemingly out of the inning but after the extension, the Storm were able to bring home 2 on a double to tie it up. In the 5th, Krick helped herself at the plate with an RBI single followed by a big double from Hailey Ruckle pushing the lead back to 7-3. It was Krick again in the 6th with an RBI double as the Hawks tacked on 2 more insurance runs which would be big later.

In the 7th, needing just one more out, Chemeketa smacked a grand slam to creep within 1 run but Krick was able to slam the door immediately after giving her the complete game win at 9-8.

GAME 2

If the Storm had any momentum, it was immediate squashed in Game 2. Escalera was able to put 3 zero's on the board while the Hawks blasted 4 home runs. Former CBC goalkeeper Raquel Palmeira lead the way for the Hawks with a early RBI single along with Krick to give Basin a 2-0 lead. The Hawks added 2 more in the bottom of the second before the bats broke open.

In the 3rd, shortstop Leia Duropan opened it up with a solo home run. Then Palmeira blasted her first homer of the day as CBC continued the hit parade with RBIs from Kodi Fraser and Krick. In the 4th, Palmeira notched her second home run of the day before Fraser put the cherry on top with a grand slam. Chemeketa's 2 runs would not be enough as Escalera navigated her way to the 14-2 final in 5 innings.

The Hawks will host #9 Edmonds on Sunday in a double-header with first pitch scheduled for 12pm.
