Game Recap: Baseball |

Hawk bats come alive in sweep of Warriors

Columbia Basin defeated Walla Walla at home in a pair of East Region games by scores of 12-6 and 13-2. Levi Stevenson and Sonny Salazar both earned wins in the effort.

GAME 1

CBC dropped a tough one on Wednesday in Walla Walla 2-1 so the Hawks came looking to right the ship. Stevenson was dialed in for 6 innings as Basin took a 10-1 lead into the 7th.

It was CBC in the third kicking off the scoring with a sac fly from Tate Kubena before a parade of walks and hit-by-pitches gave the Hawks two more for a 3-0 lead. In the 5th, Basin again put runners in scoring position as Andre Muneton singled in one followed by a walk and another HBP for 3 more and a 6-0 lead.

Walla got on the board with an RBI groundout in the 6th but CBC immediately erased it was 4 more runs in the bottom of the frame capped by a 2-RBI single from Kubena.

Stevenson got himself into trouble in the 7th with a couple of walks and base hits as the Warriors would not let him through the frame. Sy Waldron was able to get out of a bases loaded jam holding it at 10-6. In the bottom of the 8th, Andrew Lehman singled in a run and Diego Martinez Griffin walked with the bases loaded for a 12-6 lead that was closed down by Cohen Sunich and Muneton in the 8th and 9th respectfully.

GAME 2

Looking to avoid a repeat of Wednesday's 2-1 loss in Game 2, CBC would need to get the bats going again. Walla plated 2 in the first inning which would be Salazar's only blemish on the day. The rightly was able to navigate the ship the rest of the way for the day and a complete 7-inning game.

The Hawks erased the deficit in the bottom of the first and then some. Martinez Griffin, Sunich and Muneton connected for extra base hits to right field, good for 4 runs and a brand new lead. In the bottom of the 3rd, Caden Yesford doubled down the line in left for a clutch 2-out 2 RBI hit, pushing the lead to 6-2. Salazar worked around contact all day from the Warriors who never threatened in the middle innings.

The bats broke it open in the 6th with 7 runs on RBIs from Diego Escandon, Muneton, Sunich and a wild pitch walk from Sunich. Now with a 13-2 lead, Salazar made his way through a clean 7th inning for the 13-2 final.

The wins put CBC into firm hold of 3rd place in the East and would clinch a playoff spot with a Yakima loss in their second game of the day. They will host Big Bend on Wednesday at 1pm for the final home game of the regular season at 1pm.
