Taking over the CBC football program in 1977, the coaching career of Dick Zornes had already seen stints at Hawaii, Montana Tech, Eastern Washington, and in the CFL with the British Columbia Lions.

Columbia Basin College was Zornes’ first head coaching assignment.

With the help of assistant coaches Larry Hattemer, John Howard, and Gary Houser,  Zornes set out to take the football program  at CBC to the next level.  Together, the staff recruited and coached the 1978 squad to the only National Championship in CBC history.

Zornes departed CBC for Eastern Washington in 1979, guiding the Eagles from a Division II program to Division I Big Sky Conference Champions in 1992.

In 15 years at the helm, Zornes compiled an 89-66-2 record.  Dick also served EWU as Athletic Director from 1990-99.

A four year starter as a defensive back and two-time team captain for Eastern Washington State College, Zornes was one of 13 Defensive Backs named to Eastern’s “100 for 100” —  The top 100 football players in 100 years of football history at EWU.

Zornes was inducted into the EWU Hall of Fame in 1999.
